Keynote Interview - Robert Schneider (The Apples in Stereo)

Friday, 11 September 2009 4:30 PM

VENUE: The Judith Wright Centre - Performance Space

From singer/songwriter responsible for indie pop darlings The Apples In Stereo, to founder of the Elephant 6 recording collective (Olivia Tremor Control, Of Montreal) to producer of Neutral Milk Hotel's indie classic, to children's entertainer and mathematician, Robert Schneider is one of the most respected and eclectic characters in indie music today.

Facilitated By:
Steve Bell - Time Off Magazine (AUS)

After leaving his former career as a solicitor, Steve Bell has been involved in Brisbane street press at Time Off magazine since 2000. Since beginning as a freelance writer Steve has interviewed over 1,000 bands, without ever once asking the same question twice (to his knowledge), and for the last two years has edited the publication. In numerous past lives Steve managed several Brisbane bands (Giants Of Science, Iron On, Intercooler etc), ran an independent label, worked at Skinnys for many moons, sold band merch at far too many gigs and appeared regularly on Triple Zed, and he still knows very little about anything (quite an achievement). Currently holding his breath until St Kilda win the AFL Grand Final.

Speakers:
Robert Schneider - The Apples in Stereo (USA)

Robert Schneider is the creative force behind US indie band The Apples in stereo, a noted producer, children's music creator, amateur mathematician and co-founder of the Elephant 6 music collective.

Robert formed the indie rock band The Apples in stereo in 1993 with the Tidal Wave EP that became the inaugural release on the Elephant 6 label imprint.

Schneider has won a huge cult following not only for his musical career including two recent performing guest appearances on Comedy Central's The Colbert Report, but also for his exceptional mathematical mind. He's been a featured speaker at the Mathematical Association of America's bi-annual event MathFest three times and created a a new scale which he named "The Non-Pythagorean Musical Scale" based on natural logarithms. This scale is included on the physical CD version of 2007’s breakout Apples album “New Magnetic Wonder.”

In 2007, Schneider made his debut on the big screen in the Mike Myers' vehicle "The Love Guru" where he enjoyed a cameo role and producing a song for the film. The Apples’ in stereo's two most recent CDs for indie grownups - New Magnetic Wonder and Electronic Projects For Musicians, have been tremendous successes and are co-released through actor Elijah Wood's Simian Records, Yep Roc Records and The Elephant 6 Recording Company. This month, The Apples in stereo will release “#1 Hits Explosion,” a greatest hits album available in Double Vinyl / CD / Download available through applesinstereo.com.

His recently released kids project, Robbert Bobbert, is being developed into a television series by the animation team behind Nickelodeon's hugely successful Yo Gabba Gabba show and the Creative Producer who has developed and produced hits for the Disney Channel and Cartoon Network, respectively.
