Background
Where did it all start?
In 1994, Q Music received its first round of funding, and has been running solidly since 1995.
Over the past six years, Q Music has become first point of contact and interface for emerging artists and industry workers within the wider music industry. Q Music is an active voice for the Queensland music industry on a national and international level.
Increasingly, as the industry sector grows and develops, musicians, publishers, labels and other interested parties require Q Music to be aware of a more globalised environment to position and strengthen the industry with a view to longterm sustainability. Signature events such as BIG SOUND and Q Song promote networking and collaboration that contributes to the profile of the Queensland music industry.
Q Music’s stakeholders include government and industry bodies seeking to generate partnerships, develop projects or needing information, advice and referral. As a state-wide network, Q Music plays a vital role in seeing ideas come to fruition.
Q Music also forms a vital piece in the cluster of arts organisations who advocate to government directly on a range of issues impacting upon the local and national arts industries. Issues facing the industry are multi-faceted, resulting from a rapidly changing environment. Current issues include the exponential growth in digital distribution and marketing; the distribution of MP3s and other media formats; liquor licensing; state-wide venue development; challenges for music retailers; and the continued issues of local content placement in Australian media.
Q Music leads the way in collaborating with other strategic partners in providing a practical ‘think tank’ environment for research, reflection and strategic review at a broader level.
Situated in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, the heart of Queensland’s entertainment industry, with stakeholders all over Queensland, Q Music provides a physical and virtual base from which music industry workers from all sectors and regions can establish networks, create partnerships and share the information that will drive the next generation of Australian music.
Q Music is incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act and is governed by a management committee of 13 individuals representing the diverse spectrum of music industry practitioners and participants. The founding goals of the organisation still remain - to establish a state-wide music industry network for the sharing of knowledge and information.
