A-Venue is a grants program open to regional Queensland local government organisations. The program aims to assist young emerging musicians aged between 15 and 30 to develop their skills and professional opportunities in the music industry. The program supports access to business training, mentoring, industry induction, management skills training, access to production facilities and links to entertainment events in local communities.

The goals of the program are:
• To connect emerging bands and musicians with the professional music industry and develop partnerships locally, state-wide and nationally.
• To offer advice on training and professional development opportunities in performance and band management
• To provide regular showcasing and networking events
• To raise the profile of emerging bands and industry workers
• To encourage engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait people and those from diverse cultures
• To foster engagement and participation by young people in creative programs

Arts Queensland introduced the A-Venue youth music initiative as a pilot program in 2000. It then became a key element of Arts Queensland’s Children and Young People in Creative Queensland 2003-2005 policy. Prior to 2009, five local government areas have received funding to deliver A-Venue initiatives: Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton, Townsville and Cairns.

A-Venue is now also an important component of Arts Queensland’s contemporary music strategy, press play 2009 - 2012, and Arts Queensland’s regional arts strategy, Artbeat: Regional Arts and Culture Strategy 2010-2014.

In 2009, Arts Queensland invited submissions from local governments across the state to participate in the A-Venue program. Existing partners were welcome to reapply and new entrants were encouraged. Successful applicants received funding for an initial pilot period (November 2009 to June 2010), at the end of which eligible participants will be invited to submit proposals for a three-year period (July 2010 to June 2013).

Successful A-Venue partners for the pilot period (November 2009 to June 2010) are as follows:

Cairns Regional Council
Rockhampton Regional Council
Sunshine Coast regional Council
Gold Coast City Council
Moreton Bay Regional Council
Southern Downs Regional Council

Q Music is Queensland’s peak body for services to contemporary music, and has been contracted by Arts Queensland to provide coordination services to A-Venue partners.

What participants have said about A-Venue:

I just wanted to write and say a very big thankyou to yourself, A-venue and the Gold Coast Council for putting on the Press Kit Development Workshops on the weekend. As a band we found it incredibly helpful to be able to sit down with such experienced and knowledgeable representatives from the music industry and felt very priveleged to be able to do so. They were able to very quickly identify aspects of our band management that we need to work harder on and things we should start to consider as well as providing great helpful advice on how to do so. They were also very good at identifying our strengths and suggesting ways we could further capatilise on the good things we are already doing. The photos and bio will also be an amazinlgy useful resource for us and something we are very grateful for. After this weekend we feel a much stronger and focused band with a world of opportunity ahead of us!
