Band Mentor/Trainer/Guru (Gympie)

The Australian Institute of Country Music (AICM) located in Gympie has, since 2001 provided a platform to bring budding young musicians together in bands to explore their creative, musical and performance potential, and provide real, live experience in the music industry.

One of the founders of AICM Dr Geoff Walden, long-standing music education director and Band Guru, is retiring in 2017. AICM now seeks expressions of interest from appropriately qualified people to take over that role on a part time basis. AICM is keen to potentially appoint more than one person to facilitate the ongoing growth of AICM (one of whom will ultimately oversee the program).

AICM is seeking one or a number of talented, musical maestros with the skills and experience to work with groups of up to five young artists per band to create great music. The role also has scope to provide individual instrumental tuition (bass, guitar, drums etc) to students in line with demand, to help develop the next generation of musicians.

The ideal candidate/s will possess a positive and collaborative attitude and outgoing personality, with experience in working with youth, and a genuine love of teaching musicianship. They will enjoy all musical genres, and have an ability to use a wide variety of music for students to learn.

AICM is looking for a community-minded person who has a minimum of five years' experience as part of a band, and who has, or is able to quickly obtain, a current Blue (Working with Children) Card. They are looking for people who are positive, encouraging and genuinely enjoy working with youth, with whom they are easily able to establish a positive rapport.

Whilst not mandatory, a teaching qualification and music background would be highly regarded.

The role will involve:

  • Teaching students weekly at band practice, outside school hours (usually afternoons), and generally during school terms
  • Teaching students a musical instrument either one-on-one or in a group (as determined by you) (optional)
  • Band mentors must be willing to attend a reasonable number of student performances in their own time, in order to assess progress.

Times and days worked will depend upon the number of students and bands, which is anticipated to increase over time.

Expressions of Interest must include:

  1. A cover page of no more than 2 pages outlining your skills and experience suitable to the role
  2. A current CV, with 3 current work referees
