Membership & Subscription FAQ

The following frequently asked questions have been prepared to assist members in understanding QMUSIC's transition to a Company Limited by Guarantee, and the implications for existing memberships. We encourage all members to read this information carefully.

QMusic Constitution

#Why did QMUSIC change to a new structure?

On 3 June 2025, the members of Queensland Music Network Incorporated passed a special resolution to convert the Queensland Music Network Ltd (QMUSIC) to a Company Limited by Guarantee.

QMUSIC made this change to modernise its governance, improve flexibility and align with best practice operations - including for BIGSOUND, which attracts significant funding.

QMUSIC’s previous structure, as an Association registered in Queensland, meant it was unable to operate outside Queensland.

A Company Limited by Guarantee is the most common type of structure for a charity or not-for-profit organisation and offers greater adaptability in governance, national recognition.

#What happens to my QMUSIC membership in this structural?

Your membership automatically converts to a new category of “Subscriber”.

All the benefits you enjoyed previously as a member will be carried over to your subscription  – there will be no loss of benefits with the change, eg you remain eligible for discount tickets to BIGSOUND, newsletter subscriptions etc.

The benefits you receive will be relevant to the Subscriber category you select and pay for (as was the case previously as a member).

#Do I automatically remain a QMUSIC member after the change?

No. If you wish to, you will need to join QMUSIC as a new Ordinary Member. Under the new Constitution, all Members of Queensland Music Network Ltd (QMUSIC) share in the company’s liability (this is a factor of being a Company Limited by Guarantee), but this liability is limited.

Because Queensland Music Network Ltd is a Company Limited by Guarantee, in the (highly unlikely) event of insolvency or winding up, Members may become liable for QMUSIC’s debts. This liability is limited to a maximum of $2.00 per Member.

Due to the the liability requirement, to become a Member under the new structure you will need to apply as an Ordinary Member, which you can do via this form, specifically acknowledging that you:

  • Agree to comply with and be bound by the Queensland Music Network Ltd constitution
  • Agree to guarantee up to $2.00 in the event of insolvency or winding of Queensland Music Network Ltd
  • Consent to becoming an Ordinary Member in Queensland Music Network Ltd.

It is for this reason that we cannot automatically convert you to an Ordinary Member under the new structure, and why we have created the “Subscriber” category to ensure you do automatically retain all your previous benefits.

There is no cost to you converting to a Subscriber. The Ordinary Membership fee is $2.00 per year.

#What’s the difference between a “Subscriber” and an “Ordinary Member” under the new structure?

As a Subscriber, you retain all the benefits you previously enjoyed as a member – subject to the membership category and annual fee you had selected. A Subscriber, however, is not entitled to vote at a general meeting nor seek election or appointment to the Queensland Music Network Ltd (QMUSIC) Board.

Ordinary Membership provides an opportunity to contribute to the governance of Queensland Music Network Ltd (QMUSIC). This is distinct from Subscriber status, which provides access to programs and benefits but does not include governance rights. If you're interested in becoming a Subscriber, please visit our subscription page.

As an Ordinary Member, you have certain rights. Two critical rights are:

  1. The right to vote at a general meeting, and
  2. The right to nominate for election or appointment to the QMUSIC Board

There are no financial benefits (eg discount tickets to QMUSIC events) for Members.

#Can I just be a Subscriber to QMUSIC?

Yes! You can elect to be a Subscriber only at Queensland Music Network Ltd (QMUSIC). The benefits you receive will relate to the Subscriber category you select and the annual fee you pay. The Subscriber categories and fees can on our Subscription page.
